Nest Tea Bar

Are you Coffee or TEA?

Tea lovers would rejoice at the opening of Nest Tea Bar located along South Bridge Road. The interior of Nest Tea Bar is beautiful with vintage chairs and furniture, providing a modern and quiet setting for patrons to enjoy and immersed in their tea experience while admiring its chic interior.
Interior
Given that Nest Tea Bar is a tea-centric café, it is no surprise that there isn’t a coffee machine here. Grab your coffee from Sarnies or Department of Caffeine nearby if you need. The menu is simplistic with a choice of either tea-tails (tea based cocktails and no it doesn’t get you drunk) or Hot brew Tea.
Menu
I am more of a coffee person so I knew little about tea other than the English breakfast, earl grey and chamomile tea. We went ahead with the staff recommendation of their cold-infused tea: pandan chiffon and blissful berries. I prefer the latter as the sparkling tea tasted light and refreshing on a hot day. The pandan chiffon cold brew fell short of expectation as it tasted more like drinking Chinese tea on itself and the pandan leave, other than its fragrance, seem to be just for display.

Pandan Chiffon Cold Brew
The staffs are friendly and happy to talk to you about tea and guide you in direction of teas that best suit your palate. To accompany the tea drinking, they do offer small selection of cakes outsourced and a slice of malay kuih with any purchase of tea during their soft launch period now. (while stock last).

Overall, the concept of a tea bar is rather novel and serves as an alternative for tea lovers in the café-densed Chinatown/Telok-Ayer region. My experience at Nest Tea Bar was a slight disappointment, perhaps since it is still in soft launch phase. Hits and misses as the Pandan chiffon failed to impress and nothing spectacular considering its price of $5.90.

Ponggol Nasi Lemak

What’s the food that you will miss when you are on a long overseas trip away from home? I am not sure about you but I just want for a plate of fragrant nasi lemak with a side of the sambal chilli.
Nasi lemak lovers like me will be delighted to learn that Ponggol Nasi Lemak has opened a third outlet located in a two storey shophouse along Jalan Besar Road. I like that it is air-conditioned and is more spacious than the other two outlets at Tanjong Katong and Upper Serangoon. The restaurant has a fast-food style concept, modern furnishings and unique menu specialties.

In conjunction with its 35th year, this outlet also offers 7 NEW premium house specialities to add in more varieties.

First up, we have the crispy chicken skin with curry leaves - $1.50 per serving and $4.70 per tub. Fat is removed from under the skin before tripled fried to ensure crispiness and tossed with kicap manis (Indonesian sweet sauce), black pepper and curry leaves. This is simply too addictive but might be slight spicy, shiokness!

Grilled Japanese Squid with kicap manis - $7.50 per piece if you are in the mood for some non-fried house specialities.

Crispy battered whole prawn/ Crispy Battered Fish Fillet - $3.80 for two pieces. This is my favourite dish among all their house specialities which I have tried. Live prawns and  fresh leather jacket fish fillet battered and fried to crisp perfection, doused it with their aioli dip for an extra zesty punch. The batter was neither too oily nor thick, even better than the ones you could get from Long John or Manhattan’s.

Signature Ngoh Hiang- $1.50 per piece. The essential ingredients like minced pork, water chestnuts and chives with five spice powder are wrapped in beancurd skin and fried. I really like their fried items on offer and perhaps the addition of prawn in the ngoh hiang could add a different dimension to overall taste.
And of course not forgetting what they are famous for: NASI LEMAK!!

The sambal (fried chilli paste/ hae bee hiam) goes particularly well with the rice rich in coconut milk flavour at which the best Thai Hom Mali grain is used for its perfect texture. I really liked the sambal; robust in flavours and I could just have it with the plain rice alone! My favourite ingredients are eggs, otah, chicken wing and sambal long bean and acar where it tanginess cut through the richness of the rice. Feeling hot from an overdose of the chilli, fret not as this refreshing cup of homemade hibiscus ice tea helps to cool you down and help with digestion and blood circulation.
.
And if a cup of hibiscus drink is not enough bring down the heat in you, there’s a bonus option of having their homemade ice cream and sorbet at $2.50 per cup. Flavours available include Raspberry Mango, Lemongrass Lime, Pink Guava, Kyoho Grape, Passion Fruit, Blood Orange, Horlicks, Milo and Peanut Butter Milk. I personally like the refreshing kyoho grape and the creamy nutty texture of peanut butter milk!

Nasi lemak is enjoyable at any other time of the day and this new outlet offers not only a new look but also a new twist to the traditional nasi lemak. And my tip is: zoom in for the crispy battered fish and prawns!

Wildfire Kitchen + Bar

Taking over the previous space left by Hatched is Wildfire Kitchen + Bar where it is more of a casual self-serve restaurant. No More EGGporn but here comes BURGERporn as it offers gourmet burgers, brunch, char-grilled steaks, coffee and even craft beer in bottle and 3 beers on tap (Hitachino, Rogue and Proper Job)

To be honest, what entices me to come on a weekday afternoon is more because of their launch of the brunch menu. Lol it’s ironic I know but the trend these day is all about café, café-hopping and brunches isn’t it?

We decided on ordering a burger and two brunch items (one sweet, one savoury) to share. It did not take too long for our buzzer to sound out as it is slightly after lunch-hour that we arrive at 130pm.

Here's their menu (courtesy from their FB page):
Brunch Menu

Burgers
The Classic Burger ($16) – A 120 Day grain-fed beef patty with butterhead lettuce, sliced tomatoes, beer caramelised onions, cheddar cheese and signature mustard sauce. The size of the burger was decent considering its price and it being the most basic one on offer, I bet the others would look like some towering burgers. The wagyu patty is more on the lean side and thus slightly drier and bland on its own but the melted cheese definitely hits the right spot. The part I like best about the burger is the bun. The buns are soft and spongy on the inside while beautifully crisped on the edges. The burger comes with side of fries which taste good although it has turned cold.

Crunchy Brioche French Toast ($16) – Thick soft brioche rolled in crushed cornflakes and topped with blueberries, strawberries honey roasted walnuts and maple Chantilly cream. I admitted to ordering this as it looks to be the most visually appealing to me. And we were pretty quite blown away when we took the first bite. The fluffy brioche was soft while the crunchy crushed cornflakes/roasted walnuts added alternating textures to each bite. This remains as my favourite dish among the 3 which we ordered.

Breakfast Omelette ($13) – Classic Omelette with mushrooms, ham and feta cheese served with  tater tots (deep fried grated potatoes), salad and toasted sourdough bread. Now I realized that sourdough bread is missing in the plate that they served us. The overall appearance looks pretty unappealing as the ham and mushroom were hiding within the omelette. Turns out to be pretty delectable and ends up being the first plate that we wiped clean. 好吃不好看

Wildfire offers not only burgers, brunch, beer (6-8pm happy hours) but also desserts: ice cream cookies from cookies & co ($6). Wished the patty was more seasoned and flavoured and that would sit it perfectly sandwiched in those SOFT buns. I love big buns and I cannot lie~ especially SOFT ones LOL!

To get to the place, it is rather inaccessible or ‘ulu’ as you have to walk approximately (1 km) from the nearest Botanics MRT under the sweltering hot sun. Good to know that Assembly Coffee is just next doors, their waffles with ice cream has been raved to be among the top in Singapore. So, kill two birds with one stone at a go!

Artistry Cafe

Artistry, an art gallery and café situated in Kampong Glam is one of the more unique café in the local café scene. I really love the exteriors of the café, contrasting greyish and white walls with recycled timber tables, while basking in the sun, enjoying the morning breeze and people watching. The interior boasts a gallery of art pieces and gives a cosier ambience.
Black and white?
As of now, I have been to Artistry for brunch 6 times! A record already lah, considering that 20 new cafés sprout out per month leh! I simply cant get enough of their brunch items, and especially the PB and J French Toast.

PB & J French Toast (MUST TRY)
Fat fluffy brioche pan fried till golden brown stuffed with peanut butter and raspberry jam. The brioche was crispy around the edges and soft within. The salty nutty texture of peanut butter and tartness of the jam was an awesome mix. Scoop of smooth vanilla ice cream atop the warm brioche, with the drizzle of maples syrup scream perfection totally! I could have this again and again, take my MONEY please.

CrabCake Burger ($20)
Squid ink Buns with Truffle fries or plain fries. Another item which I really liked here. The crabmeat was shredded and the crabcake patty has a moist core while retaining its crisp on the outside. Also worth a mention is their truffle fries, I just couldn’t stop munching on them!

Salted Caramel & Bacon Waffles ($15)
Waffles were light and crispy. Another good play on the sweet-salty (salted caramel) from Artistry. The smoked apple bacon on the side complement the waffles pretty well!

Duck Confit Croissant ($15)
Croissant was flaky and buttery and generous serving of pulled duck confit sandwiched. I have seen pulled pork but pulled ducked is a new to me. The silky smooth and creamy melt-in-the-mouth scrambled eggs perfects the dish!

Big Breakfast ($20)
Your usual big breakfast with eggs, sourdough, mushroom, wild rocket and tomatoes, this did not really wowed me as this is pretty the same as compared to the big breakfast served from other cafes. And the sourdough was a tad hard that we left it unfinished.

Was back on CNY day 3 to try out their CNY special brunch menu, and it doesn’t disappoint as well.

Buttermilk Vanilla Panna Cotta ($14)
Served with mandarin orange yoghurt, Artistry sure has injected a CNY touch to their menu. Not only does it looks pretty, the panna cotta tasted light and refreshing. Too bad its only a CNY special and not meant to stay.

Chilli CrabCake Burger ($25)
Artistry Signature crabcake burger served with chilli crab sauce. The sundried tomato buns was fried to a golden brown like mantou that I could not resist dipping it into the spicy tangy sauce sauce, crabilicious!

Artistry is definitely one of my favourite café in Singapore. They serve fantastic food and the menu changes seasonally to festive occasion like CNY/Christmas. They have since changed their opening hours to 9am and a have a dinner menu (sliders and waffles) from 5 to 930pm. I have heard pretty good reviews for their house-baked cakes like red velvet, sea salt chocolate. It is definitely a hot spot for be it breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea or dinner and could be seen crowded with locals and tourists on weekend!

Note: Kitchen operates from 10am to 430 pm, No GST or Service Charge but do come
EARLY as their hot favourites tend to get sold out fast!

I am not sure about you but I will definitely be back!! And, you might just spot me at Artistry lol!

Do say hi ya! =)

Paddy Hills Cafe

Paddy Hills took over the famous South Buona Braised Duck Rice and today marks their second day of operation.

A step into the café and we were greeted to the strong fragrance of coffeebeans The setting of the café was rather impressive, with a coffee counter with bar seats, cosy corners for couples and a communal table for large groups. The place transform from a café in the day to a restaurant at night and it boasts a large menu (different menus for day and night) wow, and it’s not just a change-over of 4 or 5 items but entire menu of close to 20 items. Impressive it sounds isn’t it?

Some drinks to quench the thirst on a hot sunny day: Taste like purple $7 and yuzu effervescence $7. These quenchers are refreshing and instant coolers on a hot day. Alternatively, there’s coffee or milkshake to choose from.

I guess we were lucky to come in the day as we get to enjoy both breakfast and lunch items. From the breakfast menu, there’s the standard big breakfast, French toast, pancake but all with a slight twist.

We started off the long hours of feasting from: some sides from the day menu (0830 – 1730).

Cauliflowers Fritters ($12) – at first glance, I thought it looked pretty normal just like what my mum could whipped up at home. But the bomb is the masala yoghurt that comes with it. The tangy masala and the slight sour yoghurt really opens up one’s appetite.

Toasted Rice Cake ($15) – who would have thought that korean rice cake could be toasted? While I like how the rice cake retains it crispy texture outside and soft within, my subsequent pieces tasted a little hard, perhaps after prolonged exposure. So my suggestion is to order this dish for sharing, and eat it while hot!
Golden Mantou Sliders - $23 Put simple, this is mantou with beef patty sandwiched within, with purple sweet potato fries. I really love the thin strips of sweet potato fries. These strips of sweet potato fries were hand-sliced and fried upon order. They were just nicely fried, as overfrying it would result in burnt fries. Really crunchy and addictive, a change from the golden yellow usual fries we see to a beautiful purple shade.

We also had the truffle fries, which could hardly go wrong. Truffle taste was distinct.
We had Beetroot Carpaccio - $18 beetroot was crunchy and the soft silky tofu added contrasting texture to the overall dish. Furthermore, not only was it beautifully plated with vibrant purple of the beetroot, orange from the carrot and green from the cucumber, it’s also a vegetarian dish! Definitely a delight for vegetarian eaters!
Big Breakfast - $24 Egg was done 63 degree for us, and the one item that had my eyes lit up immediately was the bacon steaks!! Isnt that Kong Ba? The one you typically see in Teochew restaurant with steamed man tou. Yet, it has found its place in the Big Breakfast at Paddy Hills. The glistening homemade bacon steak was juicy but would have been better if more tender.

Kimchi Fried Rice with souv vide eggs - $20 Quite a surprising find on the menu as fried rice is a traditionally Asian dish. And since one of the staff recommended it, we decided to follow and order it to try. Its pretty amazing that the fried rice comes with the wok hei flavor (wow wow, can open zi char shop liao leh). The kimchi flavor could have been more intense and well-mixed with fried rice instead. The hanger steak was done to perfection so dope!

Potato & Fish - $22. If you are thinking of fish and chips here (you might think that since fried rice could be found here, what could not be?), you are half right. They don’t exactly have fish and chips but sea bass and rosti. The highlight of the dish is the rosti, it is finely sliced and is very crunchy as compared to the ones in Marche. One of my personal favourite dish here.
Hash Hash - $22 roasted baby potatoes with sauteed mushrooms and beef shank polenta chips. Sauteed mushrooms were really good in this dish!!

Squid Ink Tagliatelle with seared scallops, mentaiko, ikura and tobiko ($23) Pasta are made fresh in house. And my friend who is not really a pasta lover, says he would not mind coming back PaddyHills just for this again! Also my favourite item in the lunch menu.

Quesadillas - $18 Pulled Pork here was juicy and the homemade bbq sauce really gives it an extra punch.
For desserts, there are three choices and they are all equally good and if I have to make a pick out of the 3, the orange ricotta pillow would be my first choice and the other two tied for second!

Berry Ricotta Hotcake ($19) – Most pretty looking among the three. If you are a berry person, go for this!

Orange Ricotta Pillows ($18) – melt in da mouth to die for fluffiest ever pancake paired with coconut ice cream. Yes, all my favourite and it was that fluffy we all echoed upon the first bite. I KID YOU NOT.
The Asian Brick ($18) –brioche french toast with yam ice cream, purple sweet potato anddd goreng pisangs? Wow, it is another unique twist to your normal french toast with caramelised bananas and maple syrup. No-wonder it is named the asian brick! Brioche could be fluffier and sweet potato boiled to softness, that would be perfect.
All in all, there are hit and misses in the food but a bit of fine-tuning would probably works well. We definitely loved the ambience of it and did I forget to say there is a large mural wall outside of the café. I foresee it being a hotspot for hipsters to take OOTD after having meals in this promising café!
